hi everyone.

could someone be so kind as to explain to me what the "starter override" button's function is and how it works.  i can guess the obvious reason for it but i'm still kind of baffled about the whole thing.

thanks.

The button, under the hood, is to allow the starter to work in the event of a failure of the seatbelt/starter interlock function. If the module(drivers side, rear, inside,by the fenderwell) fails, or the seat sensor(s), wiring/relay, you can push the button in, and it will allow the car to start one time. You would have to push the button every time to start the car until the system was repaired, or unhooked. Or, you could start the car without sitting in the seat(auto trans) from the outside. All 1974 GM cars had this interlock "feature", as well as some very early '75s. Ain't guv-ment regulations neat?!

Vette(s): Coupe 74 - 454 Drive it like you stole it!
I had problems here and there with the sensor on the driver seat, as well as the seatbelt buzzer on the passenger seat if I would put a box or something on it.  Long story short, the sequence was not working properly.

It didn't bother me much, but when I had to fix the seat belts, I disconnected the sensor under the driver seat.

I don't even know where that switch is in the engine compartment.  I think the previous owner disconnected it (removed ??) as he also disconnected the alarm.

One day I'll get it back in order, but for now, I can start the car without sitting in it and I can drive without the seat belt (although not recommended...).

If you have the service manual, there's a section about it that describe very well the sequences as well as the "what if".

Yeah, if you put anything in the pass. seat, without buckling the belt, the buzzer will buzz. If the e-brake is on, it will not buzz. You can simply disconnect the connectors under the seats, and it will be fine.
The "over-ride" relay is on the pass. side, upper firewall, between the wiper motor and the A/C box. Yours may not have the relay itself, but there should be an ORANGE connector there, that the relay plugs into, screwed to the firewall. Unless you plan on having your car judged(NCRS/Bloomington), I wouldn't worry 'bout it.

My buddy has a 74 with this button under the hood. We just figured it was something that someone had added to the vette to aid in tuning. Learn something new every day. Cool post.
