Over Thanksgiving I pulled a 77 out of the mud where it had been sitting since 1995. I changed the oil and filled the radiator fluid and installed a new battery. With the aid of a little spray on starter fluid, it turned over and started. The water pump was shot so I lost a lot of water, but other than that nothing. I only ran it for short time.
I found that all fluids (brake, rear end, etc) had evaporated away and had to be added. THe brakes were rusted so badly, the calipers had to be replaced, but the MC and booste were fine. I've changed the fuel filter every 1/2 hour of running time since then until I get all the bad gas out. There's a lot of junk coming through.
Hope this helps

Hey Larry, Clean out gas tank. Its better than running all the bad gas through the carb. Might save you a carb rebuild. Gas that sits for 30 days will have already started to form bacteria.Imagine what its like after years? Its a must not to run bad gas (varnish) through your carb!

If you don't want to remove the dist. to pre lube the engine, ask your major auto parts supp;y house if they have a pressure pre luber you can borrow/rent. This is a pressurized can that you put the oil in and hook up to the block where your oil pressure line screws in. It will push the oil completely thru your engine without having to remove and then reinstall your dist.
Last time I borrowed one there was no charge just had to leave a deposit until I returned it.
I would also drain the gas or you will have nothing but problems with the stale gas gumming things up. I would also replace all the rubber gas hose anywhere on the gas line from the tank to the carb. Most of the gas line is steel tubing so just check around and replace any rubber that has been installed along the line. It has to be rotten as its probably over 12 years old and you don't want to burn up the entire car for 2 bucks worth of rubber hose, if its all steel don't worry about it.
