|QUOTE|JSB69 said: I forgot to mention that if you use the caulk rather then the 3M adhesive, the emblem becomes essentially removable for those of us who would like to remove it when we wax the car.|/QUOTE|
Don't you have to redo the caulk every time you wax then? Sounds like a PITA... however, I can see the benefit of it, and how much time it would save rather than going at your emblem with a q-tip... hmmmm

Original emblems had some sort of a foam mounting tape, die-cut I believe, holding the emblems on. I got the right foam tape stuff the width of the lettering and tried to Exact- cut it. I gave up after about try #10.
I used emblem adhesive or something to hold them on. There are speed nuts on the studs too. If you look at the detail in the letter i you can tell originals from repro emblems. The originals have a distinct separation on the i. I've been looking for a repro picture for the '70 registry. Anyone got one?

Original emblems absolutely did not have pre-cut foam mounting tape. I worked at the GM hardware plant in Trenton NJ back then and I was General Foreman of the department where the adhesive was applied. I do not remember the name of the material, but we pumped it out of a small pressurized tank through a small hand held glue gun. After the black was painted and baked, the "scripts", as we called all of those kinds of emblems, were placed upside down in a fixture and the adhesive was manually applied. A piece of a gauze like material was placed over the adhesive and the parts were put into a cell pack shipping carton. I should have taken a handfull home! Who knew?

Wow! That's cool. Thanks for the clarification. I discussed the subject with someone with some NOS examples with the gauze backing on it. I guess I should go dig up that e-mail exchange and re-read it.
What was the color of the adhesive? Guess the memory really is the first thing to go.
Thanks. ~Juliet

My memory says the original adhesive was white, but don't bet the ranch on it. It seems to me that black might have been more logical and I don't think clear adhesives of that type were on the market yet. There are other things that go along with the memory, but fortunately I forget what they are.

I just found that e-mail exchange. Quoting from that:
"While {his} adhesive suggestion will work, the original Sting Ray emblem adhesive on your {car} was a rubbery material about 1/16 inch thick. That material can not be duplicated by anything that comes out of a tube. "
I guess that's where I got the foam mounting tape idea.
I should have thought more rubbery. By chance did this stuff have little bubbles or something in it which might make it appear like foam? I could have sworn there was a discussion somewhere about die-cut or not... I'll have to go hunt the NCRS archives now.

Look at this in the NCRS archives: This is where I got that die-cut idea in my head.

For some reason either I never finished reading the thread at the time when the changover 1974 was listed, or I conveniently forgot that part!
At any rate, thanks for the information.
