Heads up in Texas if you have a Texas tag in your year of car. I bought 1972 Tx tags for my car 15 years ago. Got them approved by the Tx DoT and have had them on my car until today. Went in to renew for another 5 years and they told me someone else has that tag number. How can someone else have the same 72 tag? They don't, they have just a regular texas tag with the same number as mine. Apparently the law has changed. She said whoever renews first loses their tag. So I asked when he was going to renew so I could check. Well, his tag expired 6 months ago and he hasn't renewed. So he has a junker up on blocks or something and I get screwed.
Now I have one of those ugly Texas antique tags with the Stutz Bearcat on it.
I refuse to remove my fron 72 tag. Eff em. I think I will put a Corvette logo sticker on my new tag where the stupid surrey with the fringe on top logo is.
UPDATE!
I got a call yesterday from the lady that I dealt with at the Courthouse. She said ever since I left it had been bothering her that I lost my tags to an unregistered other tag. She said she was going to run my vintage tag number again to see if she could get them for me. She called today to tell me I can use them again.
She even said she was going to personally pay the additional 60 buck renew fee if there was one.
Turns out, no fee. I stopped by Kroger on the way to the courthouse and bought her some flowers for going the extra mile. I guess not all county workers are bad.

That's kinda hard to believe, considering most recent Texas tags have a different format now...7 characters vs. 6 for the older tags. Unless they have a different YEAR tag with the name characters. My question would be, How the hell did someone else gets THEIR tags registered if you already had those characters? Evidently, they had both yours and the other ones registered at the same time somehow.....
I've got a nice set of new, never registered '74 plates, still have the paper between them, that I want to put on mine....now I wonder if I even can.

You can call your local courthouse and have them check the license numbers to see if there is a duplicate. Apparently the old law allowed the duplicate because the real license number is that little metal plate that you attach to the back plate. The guy with the same license as mine just has normal plates. I'll probably call them next year and see if I can use my 72 tags again. Don't know how long the other guys plates can go unregistered before they are defunct. What I need is for him to get new plates so his old plates would be invalid.
That stinks. Your DMV must have one of our NYS Nazi's secretly working there.
I thought we were the only one's to have stupid rules similar to that. Good luck.
Have a beer at Wilhoite's for me.

I just renewed my 72 tags with no issues. Sorry to hear they messed you up on yours. Your DMV did you bad.

KEWL!! I gotta say, that lady went above and beyond...a VERY rare thing with Guv'ment employees these days.
Give here flowers, yeah, but....take here for a ride in the Corvette, too!

Nice to a good outcome for a change. She deserves the flowers for sure.
