Topic: To Buy or Not to Buy

if it were a convertable i would buy. vette magazine says a 69 coupe in crummy condition is worth $8,000, decent condition $14,000, good $18,100, fabulous $24,200. i also believe 74-77 vettes are getting hotter and hotter regardless of the small h/p engines. that is my only regret about my 77, not enough h/p. still it is what i wanted, i'm satisfied. regardless, a vette is a vette.

I just cleared my first response because it got VERY long winded...
Basically it boils down to that these cars are completely different suited for two completely different uses...
The 81 is a cruiser...similar to my 79....Nice car to go out for a Sunday Drive in...
The 69 is for fun.. (drive it like you stole it) like my 72. Nice car to take out and drive hard over the local twisties then come home nice and relaxed...
OSSW1...the original poster just has to ask himself what type of car he wants...
Value ??? Not going to get into that except that I kind of place a very high value on the smiles per mile I get out of a car...

I`m a Chrome bumper car man myself, ayear ago i paid 10,500 for my 69 with 59000, miles. 1-5 i`d say mine was a 4.I got lucky. Even still your estimate of ten G`s is probably a little modest. I`d like to know what you seen to rate it 2.5. Paint and interior alone will cost 7G.
If the car is all there is worth it. You`ll always get a great value on a chrome bumper car when it comes time to sell.If you don`t have to drive daily I`d say go for it. Check it out closely though.
Thanks for the input. It's nice to bounce ideas of other sources. The condition of the car is this.
1) The engine seems to look rebuilt. The whole engine compartment looks quit good. Does not match the rest of the car. When the engine is running a lifter seems to be sticking. There is a oil leak coming from the front engine seal. Just by the way the oil splatter looks on the oil pan. Transmission seems to be OK.
2) The front end has new bushings and looks quit good. The head lights do not work they are in the open position.
3) The whole interior needs to be replace. Major water damage from the window seals being shot. The power windows work but barley. The window wipers do not work. The t-top panels look good. The steering wheel moves up and down a little. The odometer and tack do not work.
4) The back wheel bushing needs to be replace. It has a new fuel tank. I did not check the wheel bearings.
5) The body has one stress crack. The paint looks OK.
Thats about all I know. What do guys think?
My 81 only has 56,000 on her and I have to say I do enjoy driving her on the weekends.
Wow, Sounds like a lot of work. If you have access to large garage and you can do the work yourself, it may be worth it. But from the amount of the work needed (follow the rust inside the door panel), you could spend a year just trying to make it a driveable (without fear of pending doom). It sounds like this car has been neglected if not abused. I'd keep and enjoy my daily driver, keep on looking, or offer a lot less money.
Just my 2 cents.

I always find if you think it needs $10,000 it more than likely will double in no time and will cost you $20,000. in repairs.
Thats just my experience when it comes to cars. not being negative just realistic..............................

If you could keep your 81 and spend 1-2 or even 3 years on the 69 I think you would be very happy... (9 grand is a fair deal in my opinion...
IF you could do the work yourself and have the time... it would be a perfect project.
If I were 40 again I would have that car in my garage now and I would have been in it, over it, under it, and making up a game plan... Been there done that and I actually really enjoy re doing cars... BUT I am now in my 60's so I would have to pass ...
Shame you can not keep the 81 and drive it while you redid the 69...my 1st Corvette took 16 months to get on the road and I rushed it...The second took almost 3 years but I always had the other Corvette that I could drive... Needless to say the second one was done right I cut corners on the 1st because I wanted to drive it...like yesterday...

Now that we know the details, I'd say it's a little pricey for a small block with that much work to do. My estimate is $7500 tops, but that's me. Interior work is very expensive and a PITA.
