Today we hit the 50* mark wohoooo. So I need to start my "To- Do's" that the car needs before we take it on the longest road trip of it's life.

In no special order....

  • Change all belts
  • Change anti-freeze
  • fix stuck tach
  • fix fuel gauge

So I'm looking for starter points on the last two, I'm ok without a working tach but a correct fuel reading would feel much better on a long road tripConfused.

at one point my fuel gauge stopped working, I found the red wire comming off the battery to the connection block in the battery box broken. I repaired and the gauge started working again. It now stays at about the 3/4 mark and does not move. I'll start with checking the wire again but think it is something else. Sending unit in tank?, stuck float?, ideas......

Then the tach needle is at like 5500 and stays there.......ideas

None are show stoppers but the fuel thing would make moma feel much better........

Brother Blue, so this body giru knows you only have 55 days before launch....right? We will need a nice shot of Adam laying across your hood with a beer, so it matches his last gathering picture.

NOBODY will lay on any part of my car after this new paint! Anyway, I was just foolin'. The car SHOULD be done in a week or two. They're just putting on the final touches for the paint and I'm having a couple small repairs done. I'm sure he'll be done. Remember, he has not yet collected any money for the car!

I know one thing that your not going to do..touch the coil...take the spare down and ground the sending unit wire..it should either peg the gauge or go to empty..if it does either then the sender is probably sticken..

Albo, the problem with your fuel gauge is most likely the bladder in the tank collapsing, and hanging the float. Any other problem would have the gauge pegged full all the time, or empty all the time.
The only other possibility is the gauge itself.
The tach stuck @ 5000 sounds like either a fuse blown, or the circuit board on the back of the tach...  Does the tach move AT ALL when you turn the key on?

I finally took the cover off the '74 a week or so ago...first time it's been off in several years. Guess I should do it more often, as it seems a bug of some kind got in between the cover and the t-top...and the bug scratched the hl out of the paint trying to wiggle it's way out.
I still need to get it up and re-do the brakes, change the erl, and prolly oughta git some new shoes fer it....
