Vette(s): 1982CE,32,000 and counting. (fast!!) 1981 Vette, black on black. ZZ4 (quick!!)
I got my car back from the shop for brake work. Now I noticed that my trans won't go into the low gear(2).When I put my shifter into the low or #2 it will shift into another gear.I don't remember it doing that before. It used to stay in that gear until I shifted into another gear. Before I put my Vette on my ramps this morning what should I look for.Or does anybody else have the same trans I have 700R4 that can explain to me if this is right? Thanks.Oh,Trans has a shift kit if that makes any difference.

IF the shifter is actually in 1st(low), the trans will not shift. It sounds like possibly the shift cable needs adjusting, or even replacement.
With the car safely up in the air(ramps, lift, etc), disconnect the shift cable from the trans arm. This is usually a simple cotter pin. Then, put the shifter in park. Move the lever on the trans forward or rearward until the trans is in park.(Check by seeing if the wheels are locked.) Then see if the shift cable will fit onto the shift arm of the trans easily. If not, the cable needs to be adjusted until the cable fits the arm.
While you're under there, make sure the cable is not damaged anywhere.
You can check the cable for low position the same way, just put the shifer in "low", and move the shift arm on the trans all the way in the other direction from "park". With the cable adjusted properly, you should have a good park, and low gear.
Hope this helps

is the lowest gear on the shifter actually "2" i.e. like a 2,3,D

or maybe i should just ask what the shift positions on your 82 CE with 700r4 ??

if your lowest position is "2" then it will shift between 1 and 2 but not above..

Did ya get it fixed yet?

Like cthulhu said, actually, 2 isn't low, it's just the lowest you can shift manually into. The 700r4 has a real "creeper" low gear, and on mine and the other 82's I'm familiar with, you put it into 2, but it always takes off in 1 then shifts quickly into 2, where it stays until you shift up to 3 or D (OD). My TCC locks in 2,3,OD. I want to mod it to get it to just lock in OD over 45 mph, if anyone knows how to do that......

If your convertor is going into lock-up in second gear, there's something wrong with it anyway.
700s were not meant to have lu in second, tho it is possible for it to happen. This could be because the lu solenoid itself is plugged with debris, or one of the pressure switches on the valve body is grounded all the time.
To raise the lu speed, you need to change the lu control valve, sleeve, and spring. Go to your GM dealer, and ask for part # 8642970, or go to your favorite trans shop and ask them for a "delayed lock-up valve".
This requires removal of the valve body, and the GM valve has a small pictograph(line drawing) of the location of the valve.
Or....you could take it to a trans shop and have them do it....take your vaseline with you!! (jest kiddin!)

Some things never change

Hmm. It shifts just great. Solid and where it should - with the TCC disabled. With it active, and under light throttle and normal accel, it takes off in first, shifts into second then locks almost immediately, then shifts into third still locked, and into OD still locked. It's like once it's locked, it's locked. Slight throttle pressure and it unlocks and downshifts like it should. Full throttle downshifts are perfect. Under heavy or full throttle from stop, it shifts through at the appropriate speeds, then locks up.

I'll hit the tranny shop and see if they have the stuff you recommend. Thanks.
