Well this should be my final question of the day
thanks again for all of your help. I am having a Flowmaster
exhaust installed on my 71 today. I am going to do the
general tune up as well. I am considering replacing the
intake with a aluminum intake and I would like to convert
to a Holley carb. My car has the standard 350 in it. What
should I buy or look for in a carb. and intake.

A base-engined small block leaves you with few intake options. This is due to hood height restrictions on the 68-72 base engine hoods. An Edelbrock Performer (not Performer RPM), and Weiand Action Plus are probably the best aftermarket intakes for a stock small block. You'd want to keep your original Quadrajet if you still have it. This carb fits nicely on either intake. If you don't have it, then I would recommend either the Edelbrock Q-jet replacement or the Holley spread bore vacuum secondary 650 cfm carb. You can use your original air cleaner on either one of the intakes or carburetors. If you don't have the original air cleaner, you'll want to look for a drop-base air cleaner.

I put an Edelbrock Performer intake and an Edelbrock 600cfm carb on my L48. I thought it was a great mod. They really made the car come alive after getting rid of the old iron intake and tired carb. I had clearance problems so I couldn't use the original air intake. I replaced it with an open element filter from Mr. Gasket. It wasn't very thick and after about two years I replaced it with a 3" K&N filter this past winter. I could feel a slight change from that as well.

Thanks for the info! I decided to go with the Edelbrock Performer intake and the Edelbrock
Q-Jet carb, with a pair of Flowmaster 50 mufflers. I wanted to keep the carb change as
simple as possible. Should have it all installed Wed sometime.
Thanks again.
