That stinks. I dont have to worry about that, as the 74 was the last year that was produced without having the converter. Dont they make sidepipes for 75 and up too?

Yeah I've seen side pipes on '75s and up. I plan to get some for my '77 eventually. I don't know how it will effect me with inspection. But I'll get them eventually. Something can be done to make it pass. Is it 25 years you don't need cats in NJ?? Or 25 years you have to pass the visual inspection for cats, but not the actual requirements for emissions? I thought it was either of those two.

My Hookers sound great, and once I get new tubes or shine up the ones that are on it, they will look great too. Something about that rumble outside your window even with the windows up. RUMBLE RUMBLE

A couple of you have posed a good question.....will sidepipes on cars that came with cats pass inspection? Back in '76 I owned a '74. I removed the stock system and put on side pipes. The only place that would inspect the car was a friend of mine. The excuse was that the pipes were not factory issue. ( it did not have cats from the factory ) . I guess the real question is, if you register your car as an antique and it came with cats....do you need the cats to pass inspection? I believe in Penna. that if you have antique tags, inspection is not even required ( some of you inspection guys like George ) jump in here ). So if you title as antique, you should be able to change to pipes at any time and not care, just make sure your car is in good operating condition. If you are titled for street use full time, you might need to keep the cats on the car which means finding a set of pipes that contain the cats. I think the Vipers ( please forgive me for the use of that word ) come with a built in cat in the side pipes.

Hey RXWHITE74 and VTHokie,
Thanks for the tips on the side pipes sites. I’ve been checking them out. I’ll try the WD40 thing this weekend. I know from having a motorcycle that they sell stuff just for getting the heat spots off of pipes but I can’t remember what it’s called. Someone once told me not to use polish on pipes cause it will turn colors when they heat up.

Hi
Watch out with your price from JCL.
The 300 $ you mentioned is not for the pipes, but for the spiral turbo mufflers, that insert into the pipes. ( or did I get this wrong ? )
They are suppost to be very good and don't reduce any power.
If your pipes are getting dull, may be a nice chrome shield will help.
The complete set from HOOKER, headers + pipes in chrome go for 1 k +.
In black, they are a bit less expensive. |eek|
I also need a new side pipe, specially the right hand side.
Does anybody know if they sell only one empty pipe ?
Gunther

I got an email from a guy who says that his is a direct replacement for Hookers, I dont remember the company right now, but that was just for the pipes not the inserts. I may have to buy the spiral inserts too, but wont unless mine get a lot worse. I will buy just the pipes. I want to hear they before I buy them though.
