Ok, I have a question. Under a hard accleration I can hear a whistle kind of sound on the right side at high RPM. I have a feeling it may be the vacum canister sucking air. I checked to see if it would hold vacum but it bleeds down. If I remember right it should hold some to lower the light's after turning off the engine. Has anybody had this problem? Does the canister go bad?doh

Under heavy throttle, the vacuum would be low, so it wouldn't be sucking the canister in. Not to say that your canister isn't bad, but it's prolly not what is making the noise.
I'd lean towards an exhaust leak.
The coffee can canisters do go bad, usually rusting out from the inside. Sometimes, they will check OK if you pump them up with low pressure air and hold them under water, but...with a good vacuum pulled on it, it may leak...just depends on where, and what kind of leak it has.

Thanks JoelThumbs%20Up I'll check the canister today and give the exhaust the once over. I played with it last night and blocked  off the canister, the idle improved a little bit and smoothed out. I'm guessing it does have a leak in the tank.
Getting close to NCRS weekend, right? What day will you be in Waco? I have to be in San Antonio that weekend of the 20th but will try and come up to Waco to check things out.

Thanks again

Fred

Fred, the whistle sound you describe is most likely coming from and exhaust gasket between the manifold and the head, or headers and head if you have headers. I've heard that same whistle a million times over the years...

Still haven't committed to taking the '74 to Waco yet...if I don't take the car, we'll prolly go down Sunday.
