Does anyone know how to get a vehicle history report on vehicle older than 1981. Carfax only goes back to 1981.
Thanks

I think you are S.O.L. VIN numbers were standardized in 1981 with a 17 digits.
Before that there was really nothing.
So you'll have to do some detective work. Maybe try to search things in reverse. Start with the person you bought the car from and then see if they remember the person they bought it from. So on and so forth.
I had VIN reports on cars before but with the new privacy laws it's a no-no. I purchased a year old car and while on a trip stopped into the selling dealer with the VIN. The service guy typed it in and started showing me the info and caught himself and turned the screen away and said " I cannot show this to you". He started typing away ....probably deleting it. More privacy law stuff.

Here in NC, if you are the current owner, you can fill out a MVR-605A for a title search and send it to NCDMV with $10.00. You have to select from a list of reasons why you are requesting it, and if they thnk its legit, they send you a packet with copies of all the forms filed since the car was sold new. I expect a big bunch of bs or a big flat "NO!" because of the privacy stuff, but a week or so later, got my packet. Every owner, every lien, all of it. Dunno if CO does that. Might be worth a try.
Thanks, will try it.

Thanks, the guy I bought the car from 5 years ago passed away at 75. I'm trying to track down his son who I believe made the modifications to the motor. I was trying to determine if they were the first owners.
