Also, How are engine mounts to change out? was hoping it was not TOO big a job for a novice, Thanks!!!

Eric,

The trans should have the production code and VIN stamped verically on the smooth part of the main case on the passenger side.  This should be clear with the car on a lift, but it may be under some crud so keep a wire brush handy.

A sample 1970 tranny code would be P0A11B = P=Muncie, 0= 1970, A= January, 11= the 11th, B = M-21

As for the rear, there are #'s stamped on the bottom of the carrier case and they are easily visible.

A sample 1970 rear end code would be 2 CAM 3 21 70 W which equals; 2 = 2nd shift, CAM = 3.36 Posi, 3 = March, 21 = 21st Day, 70 = 1970, W = Warren Plant.

As for the engine mounts, once the car is on the lift, support the engine with a screw stand and loosen the long motor mount to frame bolts.  Once you are sure the engine is supported, remove the long bolts & raise the engine a little.

Now you can undo the motor mounts from the block.  From here, bolt the new mounts to the block and then lower the engine until the long bolts slide through and you can bolt the engine back in.

You may also want to take this opportunity to change your spark plug wires since the front 2 on each side go between the motor mount & block.

When you find your #'s post them & someone will decode them for you.

Good luck,

Anthony
