Vette(s): 1970 stingray, t-top, mulsanne blue with black interior, 406 ci with 444 hp, racing suspension, hooker headers/sidepipes - SOLD :(
Any of you have the means to check the history of a vehicle with the VIN? Becuase my purchase of this 70 just keeps getting more and more cluttered. Apparently the guy I am buying it from bought it in 2002, and never registered it. the title is signed over from the that sold it to him, as one does when selling a car, but he himself never registered it and put his name on the title. the likelihood of it being a stolen car is slim, and yet...I just want to make sure.

the same thing happened with my 77. This dude in Vegas (wher I live mind you) had this car sitting since 1999, he never registered the car to his name. The same owners from 1977-1999 In Cali have him the title signed in 1999, when I registered it to me recently in 2004 they saw no problems with it. If you take it to the DMV they will let you know.

Personally I would have the seller straighten out the title with his DMV and have him fax you a copy of the clear title before you sign on the dotted line. It most likely will cost him some money but hey, it is money that he should have spent up front when he bought the car.
It maybe isn't as important if you were both in the same state, but when there's that much distance between you it could turn out to be a real mess. At the very least check with your DMV to get an opinion from them on whether or not they will accept the title the way it currently is.
My 2 pennies worth.

Mike,
This practice is sometimes called "Title Jumping."
Many people who "flip" cars often do not register them in order to avoid paying the state sales tax when they title a vehicle.
Your DMV may not like the fact that the buyers section of the title is signed by someone other than yourself.
While you can not be held responsible for another person's actions, I would also recommend that you speak to someone at your local DMV Office. They may accept it, or they will ask for a "clean" title bearing your name as the buyer.
In that case, the previous owner will have to title the car and provide you with a title bearing his name as the seller.
I agree that is doubtful that the car is stolen, but your DMV people can answer this question the best.
FYI.....CarFax is only good for vehicles manufactured in 1981 & later. However, stolen vehicles remain in the national database for at least 5 years.
Good luck,
Anthony

My 2c's, Most if not all DMVs will accept that which you described, IF, the signatures are verified, (ie) notarized, if not bill of sale may be accepted after a sheriff's search, ye old stolen vehicle report, that way you can be more concerned regarding the condition of the car. My most recent purchase had not been registered in soooo long that title had been purged from the state records. Just my thought,
P.S. Michael - I have never met someone who's name is spelled as mine on my birth cert. (ie) Michael Jon.
