Thanks for the help on the Vin question. This is a cool site, I will have to update my info to detail the 81 I currently own. The deal on this other vette looks sad. A friend of mine offered to sell me this 70 conv LS-5 A/C vette for $8K, the car looks really nice and I have had the fever for it since viewing it last sunday. The last few days of research have shown that there is some discrepancy in the Vin (1644701126473, on the title and plate) this is a 1970 Impala vin #. I'm not even sure the car can be retitled. Damn shame. I will most likely let this one go.

Vette(s): 1979 Black coupe. 11256 original, documented, miles on it when I bought it in April of 2000. It now has 13100 on it. Oyster interior, like new. Everything original, everything works, except the clock. Paint has a couple of minor flaws.

Sounds like it might be a "hot" vette. or maybe a "salvage" car. I wouldn't touch it even for $100.
The real VIN can be found on the car in other locations. A partial vin on the engine, a vin on the trans, and one on the frame, I believe on top of the frame in front of the left rear tire. The last one might be the wrong location, but it is on the frame somewhere in the rear area of the vette.
Of course, the engine might not be original, the trans might not be original, and the frame might be phoney, too.

The other thing to consider is to look at the VIN plate on the windshield. It is very difficult to get to this to affix a "replacement" plate. Do the rivets look unmolested?
On the other hand, other Corvettes have been seen that had incorrect VIN plates attached after the car was repaired or fixed after a theft recovery. There was even a mention a while ago on another board about a "hot" Corvette (a mid-year I think) that had another body style VIN plate on it.
Unless you can verify the original VIN and that the car is legit, it sounds like a car to pass on.

Vette(s): 1965 white with red stinger Coupe HotRod
1970 Bridgehampton Blue Convertible - NCRS / Stock
2019 Sebring Orange Coupe 3LT
Gone but not forgotten:
1987 Yellow Convertible
2003 Yellow Convertible
2007 Atomic Orange Coupe
2007 Lemans Blue coupe
Is it possible that it's a state-re-issued VIN number? Sometimes that happens if it is a theft recovery vehicle or something.
If you can track down the original 5 digit build number of the car (last 5 digits of the original VIN), I would be most interested in the information for the 1970 Corvette Registry. :) ~Juliet

Discrepancies between the title and actual VIN plate can be a nightmare. I once bought a vette with this problem. After 37 months of trying to get it legal for road use, I finaly gave up and parted out the car. There was no evidence of foul play. However, there was not enough sufficient paper work to support a legal title being issued by my local DMV. It was a shame. But I am sure that others have been through the same thing.
