Did you try the VIN decoder under the "Research" tab?

I'm assuming this is off of a 1970 vette, correct??

Yeah...what he said...

The sequential number would be #04042(4,042nd Corvette built for that model year), with the 4 before it being a check digit.

I agree with Mike, but the "4" after the "S" shouldnt be there.  My catalog for 1970s doesn't allow for there to a "4" in the 7th spot.  Makes me think this is a fabricated VIN number

The VINS are set up to have 6 digits for the sequential number, but...Corvettes never hit the 100,000 mark, even now. Soooo....that place is used with a number that really means nothing, for the most part. It is basically just a place holder. The number 4 was used for many years in that position.

There is an article in one of the NCRS "Restorer" magazines that explains why the number is there, and explains how to tell what number should be there, as not all years have the same number. I can dig it out, and see if I can paraphrase it...Adams' Apple2008-07-12 18:51:01

Just for clarification how did you pull the month built from this vin #?

And.....

Mine has an L behind the body style code.    What is that?

1Z37L6S425016......

I was told at the license branch this was a typographical error. But the Vin plate clearly is stamped that. They didn't contest it and I let it go. I have never researched it (partly out of fear) but all this vin talk makes me wonder again.....

Any thoughts? Tuxblacray2008-07-13 06:14:18

They build "X" number of cars each day/week/month. Some days it's more, some days less. A lot of factors come into play. There are records of each days final production...sort of....
For example, if your car's VIN was 00035, and they built 100 cars per day average, then we can rightly assume your car was built the first day of production for that year model. If your car had a VIN of 00425, we could assume it was built during the 5th day of production, using the 100 cars per day example.
When you know the month production started for the model year, you can extrapolate the build date from the VIN #, going by the average number of cars built per day/month. These figures are available from several sources, one being the Wall Street Journal archives, which gave monthly production figures for all automakers at one time. Another source is the "Corvette Birthday Book", which gives an approximate daily tally for production for the year models, allowing for holidays, strikes, and such.

The L in yore VIN, Tuxmeister, signifies the L48 engine.
An X in that position would signify the L82 engine.
No typos here...yer good...yer VIN ain't been messed with.

Nope.  The 4 after the plant code (S) is correct and stands for the car line series code and is (technically) part of the consecutive unit number.  All 70s have the 4 in this position; it was 4 for the '68s, a 7 for the '69s; a 1 for the 71s, etc.
