When I close my door a light comes on under the car in the back by the spare tire area. What is the purpose of this.It goes off in a minute or so.

That's part of the courtesy light system. Your interior lights should do the same. There's a timer behind the dash that controls it. It should stay on for 15-30 seconds before shutting off.

It lights up "supposedly" so you can run to the back of the car at night and unlock your spare tire.It will come on any time you turn the headlight switch to make your courtesy lights come on

What years had this option, I've never noticed it on my pace car.

It's part of the ZX2 Convienence Group, which started about '77. My '78 has it as an option.

If your Pace Car has the interior light delay so they stay on for a short time after closing the door, then you have the option.

Vette(s): 1979, 350sb, as my kids affectionately call it "shit brown" Corvette purchased in 1996. 84,000+ miles. Not a show car, but I love her just the same.

I'm pretty sure I've got that option on mine (at least I have the delay on the interior lights), but honestly never noticed whether there was a light under there or not.  I don't have the spare tire holder anymore as it was busted and when the mechanic who put the new rear spring in for me forgot to put the holder back on.  Live and learn!

Is the light part of the tire holder or located somewhere else under there?

Must have been standard by 1982. It's on mine, but no option listed on my build sheet.
