I'm with the others on this. Mine sat for 2 years in a barn, so there was alot of dry rot. Anything rubber is suspect. Change the valve cover gaskets when you get it home, and change the oil at the same time. Go ahead and replace all filters, fuel, oil, PCV valve, and tranny if its automatic. Replace the upper and lower radiator hoses and the belts. Since she'e been sitting so long you may want to spin the oil pump to circulate some oil before starting the engine. That will save some wear on the engine. After the first 1000 miles (or a month) change the oil and filter again, and check your fuel filter. Go ahead and get a carb rebuild kit, your gonna need it. Have all your bushings inspected, and be ready for brake work. The parts aren't bad, but there are alot of them. Start with the least expensive parts and go from there. I'll be more than happy to send you a list of everything I've done or had done since I got mine in June of this year. Just ask!

My 78 sat for 12 years, the last three outside. Living on the Gulf Coast where the humidity is mostly 100 percent, and summer temps are over 100 degrees took its toll on most everything rubber; hoses, suspension, etc... I concluded it would be easier to do a frame-off in order to address everything. All of the brakes had to be replaced, lines included. The whole suspension and steering needed to be replaced as well as all of the drivetrane seals. Even the wiring is brittle, and will be replaced. The differential was about the only thing that did not show signs of needing work.
Just make sure that all the driving safety components are in good condition before you drive it.
