My wife isn't going to have time for vacation this year, and while I'm not sure how much time I'll have, I was discussing with my step-son today (he's 17) if he'd like to do anything, especially involving a trip in the Vette. He said he would like to, so I suggested a trip to St. Louis to Six Flags, and to find the Corvette Plant. He agreed, so now on to the planning stages.
I figured we could drive down on a Sunday morning (it's about a five hour trip), see the arch and find the plant, then stay the night near Six Flags for a visit there all day Monday.
Anyway, where is the plant, can you get close, and is there anything to see there? Is it in a neighborhood that's even safe enough to drive the car to? I'd love to get a picture of the car with the plant as a backdrop (it'd be a tough choice between that and crossing the bricks to enter for next year's calendar!!).
Has anyone been to the plant recently?
I wanted a Corvette my whole life, but I never dreamed of all the wonderful people I would meet because of it!

I did a google for the St Louis plant for the heck of it and couldn't find out anything about it as it is today, but found some cool pictures of them building our cars
someone will know.

Be VERY careful down around the arch. We stayed just across the river in the remodeled part of downtown and the hotel staff told us not to go out alone and it was better if there was a group.
Not the greatest place in the world and you can get on bad streets (not the surface) very easily.

Thanks for the advice. My plan is to hit downtown during the day on Sunday, then get away by night. I'm also thinking of visiting Mid-America Motorworks as we head back to Indy...

Marshall, I did a search for the plant and found out that it was on N. Union Blvd in N. St.Louis. I checked Google Earth for St.Louis and found there is a huge mfg plant towards the north end of Union Blvd. I have no proof it is the plant, but its the only place it could have been. Don't have any idea what they do there now. You could always drive by and check it out. Have fun on your trip!

The plant was at the corner of Union and Natural Bridge in North St. Louis. That is not a very good area of town and has not been for some time. The Vette plant has been torn down, but a good majority of the remaing plant is still intact and they last built trucks and Impala's before it was shut down. Pepsi now owns a large part of the facilty and other have taken over the rest. It is called Union/70 Industrial Park. If you have Google Earth, go to St. Louis and follow I-70 west to to the area bounded by Kingshighway/Goodfellow/Natuarl Bridge/Union. You will see a parking lot across the street from the plant and that was the staging area for cars after assembly, at night thieves would steal the radio's and what ever they could and the next day they went back to the plant for repairs. As far as visiting the area I would suggest going by the Budweiser Pant on South Broadway, the arch on the riverfront and take a look at the new Busch Stadium just south west of the Arch. The area mentioned in a earlier reply about 'just across the river' is East St. Louis Il. I would never go over there for any reason...highest crime rate in southeur Illinois. Downtown St.Louis should be fine for a visit. Aslo if you get time drive through Lacledes Landing which is just North of the Arch. Have a good time.
Everything I have read about wanting to see the old plant has been negative; apparently there isn't really much to see there anymore. Definitely take time to see the Arch (take the tram car inside!) and stop at Ted Drewes' on Route 66 for some of the best frozen treats you will ever have though!

Isn't it a shame you can't visit some historic parts of some of our larger cities now a days
We had a really bad neighborhood here in Tacoma a few years back and a few Special Forces type soldiers from Ft Lewis decided to take back the hood from the crack heads and gangbangers. I think maybe we should try this approach in some of our other larger cities.

Go to the St. Louis Transportation Museum. It is just off of I-44, west of the I-270 interchange. Great place to visit if you like trains, and cars. There are several private collections in the St. Louis area that are open to the public for a fee. Also, if you have time, visit Fast Lane in St. Charles. It is a muscle car dealership that you won't believe. There is a pretty large Vette club in St. Louis maybe one of their members can give you some more points to see. 1969 L46 2007-06-08 05:58:56

Wow. I had really been looking forward to seeing the plant. It's a shame that it's gone.
I know what you mean Mark about the historic areas of larger cities. About five years back, I was going to be out east and wanted to visit the cemetery where my great-great grandfather was buried. The folks I contacted at the hitoric society that monitors the cemetery told me NOT TO GO. They said it was far too dangerous. I went anyway, but did it early on a Sunday morning. I will agree it was in a very bad part of Newark, and I don't think I'll make the trip again.
I'll see about re-thinking this adventure (to the plant site), but I appreciate the feedback and the other suggestions. I also plan on stopping by Mid-America in Effingham on the way back since it's right on the route.
