I am just curious, on ebay I saw the aluminium LT1/L82 valve covers for 300 bucks.
Seems like they are highly sought after parts.
I had no idea they were that expensive. My 76 vette I just purchased have them, even though it isnt an L82. They do seem to have been welded around one bolt hole, but I found no visable crack on the inside.
Just rambling,
Ken

I got my aluminium L82 valve covers off ebay for $200. You just gotta watch the auction.

I remember when those cost $79.00 a pair about 10 yrs. ago. Before that they were still avail. at the dealership for well under that. I guess I'll keep the 2 1/2 sets that I have.I have no idea where the 1/2 went. LOL!!!
Because guys like us continue to pay higher and higher prices, convincing ourselves that it is a thing of value.
I'm as guilty as the next one. I paid over $300 for the T-Top Rack I just had to have, which is nothing to the $4 - 5 Grand I'm out on engines (hope this one works).
It keeps me out of the bars and off the streets as it were.
It was all worth it last weekend when the wife asked if I'd pull over and let her drive a while - WOOHOO!
That evening, I talked to my stepson in Okinawa (Air Force), having sent him the newest sig pic that DWRiGHT fixed for me. He said it was the coolest vette he had ever seen.
I don't care if he is lying, it made me feel like it was all worth it!

Bingo. Hence the prices. Ditto for the older 7 and 9 fin C1 valve covers. If you have one of the older cars, an LT-1, or an L-82, and want the car judged, you will need the correct parts. Judges can usually spot reproduction parts.
Supply and demand.

Supply and demand?
High quality compared to knock-offs?
Who knows what drives us to spend more than we should?

The later, L82 valve covers were magnesium, too, and that makes a difference in the resale prices. Repros are 'luminuminum.
I actually have one L82 valve cover, too. Black, textured finish. Took it off of one that had one chrome cover, and this one. I've tried to get it cleaned, so I could repaint it, but that stuff is pretty tough! It will eventually get clean, tho...I just haven't spent any time messin with it.
If anyone is interested, you could combine the one I have, with the one Micheal(zgator) has, and have a set! Don't remember which side the one I have is for, but I think it is driver side...I'll have to dig it out and look. I'd sell it fairly cheap, if one of the C3VR members wants it...

Magnesium is lighter than luminuminum, to start with, which is why they used it. It also has a tendency to turn black if not kept clean, and protected from the elements, so the undersides usually have a blackened tone, compared to the silvery tone of luminuminum.

You know you could always buy an older no so good looking set and have them media blasted and powder-coated, just another option.
