Topic: windows not going up all the way, get out of allignment
in Forum: C3 General Discussion
Ok I normally only drive the C3 in the summer so the T tops are always off and the windows are always down. I tried years ago to get the windows to align so I could bring them all the way up and T-tops on it would be water proof. I never could get them the right way. My mechanic says to get suction cups and put the window where it fits the T-tops rubber and then use 4 of them to hold it in ostion. Tighten the screws and that should work. If I remember correctly there are like at least 4 sections where yo need to align and tighten in a certain order to get it perfect.
Anyone who had done this lately and has a checklist or insider tips on getting this done once and for all?
Thanks,

I had to put new nylon rollers in the door window regulator to fix my problem on 1980. What a pain, you have to remove the window and regulator to replace those rollers and I to have a helper to hod the regulator on to of the vise to get the old ones out and install the new ones because they are bradded in ( no bolt) and you have to be careful not to brad the them too tight. May not be your issue but on my 1980 only the drivers side had this issue, probably from more use. As for adjustment I don't know the sequence I just kept running the window up an down an making small adjustments untill I got it functional. As for waterproof I don't think you'll ever see that happening but mine only leaks when I wash the car and not going down the road. Good luck.

When I restored my 75 I relied on the Factory Assembly Manual. The manual is a great resource for part numbers, torque specs, and adjustment procedures. I have included the 3 pages from the 1978 Manual that should help you!

Couple of years ago, On my 82, I replaced all the window components except the motors in both doors because the driver window would not go up that last 1/4 inch with the door closed. I used the suction cup method to get the "initial" positions, then used the shop manual procedure to fine tune. It took about 2 weeks of tweeking before I decided it was as good as it will ever be (I am a bit of perfectionist so you may not spend that much time fussing with it). The driver window still stops about 1/8 inch shy of fully seating. I followed a youtube to clean the motors, it was an easy process. Magnets and springs seemed good and windows operate great but maybe over the years the component in the motor that detects resistance (window fully up) is wearing out. I suspect there are resistors in the motor to shut off power when the resistance gets high and these resistors have weakened and need replacing. Don't know if anyone on the forum has fully disassembled a window motor to confirm.
I may breakdown and buy a new window motor to see if that fixes it - some day, then I would have a spare to fully tear apart.

Good info, Thanks, yes I think I tried a few years back and gave up. I want to have Bair in western PA to repair them but a long drive for a window repair but maybe this summer is it. I know I replaced some parts but not sure of the motor but one side goes up much faster then the other. I will fix my Headlights first and then see if any energy left for the windows.
Thanks again for your comments.
