Vette(s): 1976 L48 4-spd, Mahogany Metalic exterior, Buckskin interior 350ci/350hp, 3rd owner, fiberglass spring, 255/50-16's Torq-Thrust II
I do all most all my own work. No one close that I would trust and then there is the cost. If I had to hire the work done I won't be able to afford the vette.
I have been forced to relive my youth recently and get my self greasy from finger tip to elbow. Broke two pistons and just could not afford to bring anywhere. Pulled everything down to the block and crank. Wound up replacing the two broken pistons and rings and replaced all the rod bearings ( mind you I have never done this before). Also put in a new cam, roller rockers, push rods, lifters, had the heads redone, the blower re sealed , new carbs, and then threw it all back together and prayed.
Early x-mas present, all is well.
Thanks in part to some great guidance from this forum.
LOL
You really learned a lot. Engine rebuild first time around. Everytime I rebuild any type engine or major AC compressors, pumps etc. you always get a little nervous when you first mash the start switch. It feels great doing it yourself and everything works........not much better then that....................(sex?)
I like to work on mine now that I got a warm place to work in the winter. As long as I don't get so stupid as to get in deeper than I should. I can take something apart and figure out how to put it back. As long as I stay away from the engine, brakes, tranny, that kinda stuff. What's left? I can paint with a rattle can, but that's about it.
Work with wood and plastic and all the other crap they build houses out these days, so it's something different.
Everyone has different skill levels. Some people don't have the sense to stay away from certain things that can possibly be too over their heads. You are smart and know your limitations, and you have other skills.......that's cool.

My father many moons ago told me that when I got a car, that I either pay someone to fix it or fix it myself.......he taught me well.

I really hope that the people that can't work on their own cars aren't offended by this. It wasn't at all meant to chastigate. We all LOVE our Vettes..........that's for sure. I'm surprised that many enjoy being bloodied, using a lot of bad language, and at times totally wasting buckets of $$$. Those that find a trusted mechanic, who does the right job the first time and is willing to use parts brought in from other sources, or not gouging them............has to feel lucky or smart in their choice. Too bad we all don't live near Dallas........................

I do all my own work, that is the reason I purchased it. I really enjoy working on the older cars.

Last night I was up till 10:45 replacing the motor mount. The night before I was playing with the timing.

Next major job is upper ball joints.
