I've seen references to the National Corvette Restorers Society (NCRS) before regarding specific questions like yours. It might be worth a visit there - http://www.ncrs.org/

If that's a genuine ZL-1 engine, it's most likely one sold through the Chevy parts counter and installed in the car at some time. Nice to have, but wouldn't have the value of one of the two factory produced ZL-1 Vettes. Basically, the value would be no higher than the worth of the car in its present condition plus the worth of the motor, assuming everything was correctly and professionally installed with all proper accessories such as transitor ignition, carburetor, etc. If this is a clone car the sum would simply be the value of the parts added together. A genuine ZL-1 from the factory would be worth more than most if not all of us could afford.

Yea, thats what i figured. My question is this... two were produced... any idea if both are fully documented and traceable?? If so... then i've got my answer. If not.. well, it'll be interesting.

Hi Brandon,

I'm looking at the 68-69 NCRS and it lists the engine code for the ZL-1 as follows. They only mention the ZL1 as a 1969 offering.

Code HP C.I. Equipment
ME 430 427 M22 ZL1 per Pkg
MG 430 427 M40 ZL1 per Pkg

The engine should have a code that looks like this:

T0623ME
19S711090 This is an example, T would mean Tonawanda, the engine plant. F instead of T would mean Flint, I don't know where the ZL1 was made but I'm sure it is one or the other. 0623 is June 23rd. ME is engine code. The rest is a serial number. Thes engines are probably highly counterfitted but they are aluminum I think and how many of those could there be.

Hope this helps you.

They only made two and I'm positive they know where they are. But here is the engine codes anyway.

On the engine pad the number would start off with a T, then the date the engine was made then (this is the code)
two letters. "ME" was the 427 ZL1 engine with an M-22 Muncie Rock Crusher transmission. "MG" was the 427 ZL1 with an M40 Automatic. I don't know if they made one of each or not. The NCRS manual doesn't say.

You cannot tell from the vin if it was a ZL1 or not.

Mark

I know of one fully documented ZL-1, it was at Bloomington this year. As for the other one, I have no idea but I suspect that no one is selling it without asking top dollar.

Let us know what you find out.
