My emergency brake works just fine but the thumb button is missing. I have purchased a scrap e brake hand assembly and will replace the entire thing if necessary....but preferably I would like to just swap out the button from one assembly to another. If I crack open/take off the grip/sleeve on the e brake will that allow me to attach the thumb button or should I just swap em out? I would just crack open replacement part to see for myself but I lrefer not tk just toss 45$ down the drain finding out the answer is "NO."

The button is held onto the rod on the brake handle by barbs on the rod. It's really hard to get that thing off with the main handle in place. I think in the end, you'll wind up making both parts un-useable... Ouch  Might be  more work to replace the whole thing, but prolly a lot less frustrating, and you won't be tossing that cash down the drain....

You might be able to find a replacement button by itself. I've never actually looked for one, but there may be someone that reproduces them. The one on my '74 was loose when I bought it, and would fall off anytime it was in the down(off) position. I finally just glued it back in. LOL

Hmmm.....I just assumed it was screwed on/threaded....felt like a threaded bolt inside but my pinkie has been known to lid to me.

Ok.....the chrome pieces of the replacement emergency brake handle are in poor condition, and the original which is still installed the chrome parts are perfect. so I took a chance on cutting off the rubber handle on the replacements part and was able to break away all the unneeded parts and remove the phone button and spring. no I'm just going to get some heavy duty clue / liquid adhesive and try to put the replacement button in the old handle.... We will see how it works out.

Sorry I cannot give you any help but I am thinking of having someone make me a leather cover for the e-brake handle. of course that would be a mod a lot of people would not do but in my case, it doesn't make a difference.
Good luck with your venture.
