Vette(s): 1971 Blue Roadster, sb400, cam, electronic ignition,10 disc CD changer, 2.5" chambered exhaust, 3.36 rear, tremec 5 speed from Classic Chevy, fiberglass rear spring and vintage air.
Went with the TRW 340 and would have done it sooner if I had known how much better the ride would be.

I put in the TRW spring from Muskeagen and ordered a complete set of 4 KYB Gas Adjust.  Once installed the ride is like night and day.

Muskeagen had the spring on for $279.00, best price around.  Easy to put on with only a minor nusence to lower the exhaust.

It is easier if the spare tire and cover assy is taken out first and it will allow you to clean away the years of dirt and grime from the carrier.  While it is out you can then spray the exposed areas with a rust inhibiter if you are in an area that it is required.  I don't drive mine in the rain or bad weather but I still rust proofed it.  This is also a good time to check the air in the spare.

You will not regret the TRW spring.

Martin

What kind of ride does the TRW 340 rear spring give?  I'm looking more for comfort than performance.  I want a smooth ride.

When ever I rode with the top up the latches in back would always unlatch every time I'd hit a bump. After changing the spring we went to cruisin the coast and they stayed latched the whole way. 180 miles. It rides great and still using Delco shocks.

A 1980 with the Gymkahana Suspension is not all that common. I am the Original Owner of one to. Are You sure that You have it? The Rear Spring should have 7 Leafs instead of 9 if I remember corectly. It will also have larger Sway Bars. About 15/16' up Front and a 9/16" out back. Putting a Fiberglass Spring in will make a Big Diffrence on a Gymkahana Car. The Original Springs were 300, Stock,330 Gym,and a 360 sold at the Parts Counter also known as the Daytona Spring. GM's Idea to make it Corner was Stiff Springs. Back in the day Car and Driver Proved the Stock Vette cornerd better than the Gym Car!  Once the Aftermarket got going it was Quikly figured out that Softer Springs and Larger Sway Bars was the way to go. The biggest Diffrence in Ride You can make would be to Change the Spring. If You want to make it Corner better install Larger Sway Bars. If You have any Plans to Install low Profile Modern tires and Wheels the Sway Bars are Manditory. The Heavy Duty Rear end Cover dosn't apply to 80-82's. When You say new and Old Spring keep in mind the New one is 28 Years old!

Your right..I don't have the Gymkahana supension.  I know my shocks are bad and I wanted to replace the front and rear springs at the same time I replaced the shocks.  After a lot of reading on this subject it seems that if I just want a good ride...not really concerned with better corning at this time...I could go back with the stock parts.   Would you say that is a fair statement?

Thanks for the advice.

Martin -- You got a deal!  I'm looking for a TRW-style 340# spring myself and Muskeagon's price is now $299. Consider yourself lucky!

Its hard to exspain but a 300ib Plastic Spring will ride better than a 300lb Steel one. It might not be Night and Day but it will. Wether one Brand is better than an nother is beyond me. My original VB&P was Purchased  in 1984 or so. Be sure to Use a Heat Sheild of some sort where the Exhaust passes under it.
