I have a tilt/tele column from my 71 that has accident damage to the bottom 2 inches of the lower shaft at the coupler (rag joint).I have a 1979 titl/tele that I can use for parts and between the two of them I think I can have a correctly functioning and looking steering column. Does anyone know any sources or about just what may be different about these two columns that would help or prevent me from achieving my end goal? There are the obvious cosmetic differences that have to be addressed.

Somewhere in the T/T assembly there is an approx. 2" difference in length between the '69 to '75 column and the '76 to '82 column. The later columns are 2" shorter and the change actually happened sometime in '75. I've heard that if you install a later column into an earlier dash you must trim off the bottom trim ring of the column where it meets the dash. Not sure if the difference is in the bottom end of the column or the top end. You'll probably have to disassemble both columns and compare the actual parts you need. Probably a lot easier to get in and out of and more comfortable, LOL Sounds like it could be a nice improvement in my 71 from the original column.. Just take up a little bit of the difference by telescoping the wheel out towards the driver. In both of my 77's I had tilt/tele and always ended up collapsing the steering wheel away from me because I have long arms. Could be a blessing in disguise. This car is not an all original car so a little tweaking here and there won't really hurt it. Thanks
