I ordered a Steering pump and cylinder for my 68. The new pump looks close to being the same as the old one. The bracket fits but for some unknown reason I can't get it back in place to fit. The bracket attaches to the engine, and then the pump fits into the bracket and the pump stud goes through a bracket attached to the engine and is adjustable. A nut backs this adjustment up. I took my old pulley off and put it on the new pump. But for some reason the pulley does not align up with the pulleys on the engine and the pump pulley rubs against the the lower housing area under the radiator.
I should have taken a picture, but didn't. Does anyone have a picture of a 327 steering pump and bracket mounted correctly in their 68. Probably the same through 1974
The cylinder went on fine, but I have spent going on two days with this mystery. The books don't show a good picture.

Can't say I haven't done something like that a time or two........................... At least you didn't pay someone else to figure it out!

Okay, now it is all back together and if all lines up. The pump is working and the adjustment nut on the valve moves the cylinder back and forth. As I said before this is a rebuilt pump and cylinder from Corvette. Now why in the hell does the power steering not work. The car steers like a semi truck without power stearing. I checked the gear box and the fluid was low and I replace that. That is just a worm gear and should not be a problem. I could tell the pump was working because the fluid was sucked down real fast when the car was started the first time and then I added more. The valve should be working because the adjustment nut moves the cylinder. So why won't it work. I am lost on this one. I did it by the book. Can someone help me on this.

Could be that the pump IS pumping, but it is not putting out the pressure needed. The pump has a by-pass valve in it, and it may be stuck open. The pump may have other problems, too....it's hard to say. Did you change the control valve also, or just the cylinder?
