My '69, newly back on the road has an annoying and dangerous characteristic:

When tooling along at about 55, I had to swerve to the left to miss a pothole.  When I swerved back, the car went a little extra to the right.  Then when I corrected that to the left, again, a little extra to the left. A total of 4 to 5 steering corrections.  There is a little play in the steering wheel, but not so much that I was concerned initially.

What do we think?  The rag joint?  some other part of the steering?  Or should I just take it to a shop?

The rag joint is easy enough to check. With the engine of, how far can you turn the steering wheel before the wheels actually turn? If it is more then 1/4" or so, the rag joint is prolly torn. If it's real bad, you'll feel it "clunk" when it hits the stops on the joint. Not too big of a job to replace, if that's what it is.
Another thing I can think of that could cause this is possibly the steering cylinder may be out of adjustment, but that usually only effects turning in one direction.
And last, the steering box itself may be too tight, or dry of lubricant. That will cause it to not want to return to center, also.
 Does the car drive straight, other than not wanting to return to center?
