Vette(s): 1976 Corvette

Hi All,

I am thinking of replacing my stock steering wheel(Vega) with with a Zoops flame style steering wheel. I have a 1976 Vette. Will I have problems with installation? It seems 1976 Vettes have a different setup? Any help here will be deeply appreciated!

Thanks

Darrell

You're gonna have problems.  1976 is supposedly a one year only steering wheel/steering column for some reason.  I've not seen any aftermarket steering wheels that will work...maybe the issue is less the steering wheel than an adapter kit for the column.  I don't know which is the case.

You may want to contact Zoops or Grant or another aftermarket company and ask them.

I believe some '76 cars did have a normal column, but I can't remember if it was the tilt columns, or the NON-tilt columns...one or the other did have a regular wheel/hub set-up. The OTHER column has the weird set-up for the Vega wheel.
There are adapters for them, but from what I've heard, they don't work out very well.
There are plenty of folks here with '76s and aftermarket steering wheels...you lissenin, Tuxdude? How bout you, Penquin?

I know the tilt column which I have is different from all the other years. The swap can be done but will require changing out some of the internal parts in the upper section. I have a sheet that shows what parts need to be changed but I think its at work.
Here is a list of parts you will need and some info on the swap

So has any one with a 76 replaced their Vega steering wheel? I don't want to try it and next year I start having problems with the installation. I was just shocked to hear that Vega steering wheels were standard on 76 Vettes. I guess I want to upgrade!

Vette(s): 1977 Coupe; yellow, 4 speed, one option car with original engine
...Z28's also used the 4 spoke wheel; at least that sounds better than the Vega wheel
