Not really. The biggest difference between the wide ratio and close ratio is the ratio spread between 3rd and 4th. The wide ratio will have a HUGE rpm drop from 3rd to 4th, where the close ratio is not that bad, which keeps the engine up in the torque band.
 The M22 is a completely different animal, internally, with wider, straighter cut gears, that make all that loverly noise!

The wide ratio also has a lower 1st gear....2.56.1 to the close ratio's 2.20.1. Unfortunately, mixing & matching gear sets isn't possible with the factory gear sets, so you can't turn a close ratio into a 2.56.1 first gear trans...and that would be just about the ultimate set-up.
