I have an 81 C3, and the brake booster was replaced relatively recently, but it is rusty.  I am thinking of removing it, sand blasting and painting it.  is there a standard color?  I am thinking a satin black, but would appreciate any input.

I believe the brake boosters were originally cadmium plated. If you want to duplicate the cadmium look, Eastwood Products has the stuff to do it.

Here is a video on how its done. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQcT8TXeQOM

I don't know if you ever changed a brake booster on a C3 Corvette, but it's not a simple task. The top bolts, especially the top left is a real pita. If you remove the drivers seat it makes it a little easier to lay on the floor and remove the mounting nuts from under the dash. I hope your a very limber guy. LOL

wow I can vouch for that Sarge. it was painful and took talent to tape the extensions and sockets just right to get the top ones ( and a lot of luck) Going to make sure its back in before a lot of other things so it will be easier.
And just to add about the color, mine is going to be chrome, no doubt about it

I think Cadmium plated is correct for your '81, but sometime before the late 70's they were black.  My '76 is black and pretty sure it always was.  FWIW....

I replaced my 1981 rusty unit with a Cad plated unit from Bair's If it was originally black, there would be some black remaining but there were no signs of it. Wasn't a pleasant project. Jeff

It should be whatever color you like, unless it's Bloomington gold or something close. Enjoy your car in whatever way makes you feel good. I have a 79, not much on the collectability scale, but I enjoy it as much as anyone enjoys their correct cars. In the past 36 years of owning my 79, I have replaced or painted just about everything. It's not a survivor, I thought about restoration, but in 79 they didn't perform to well, 190 hp. I 've redone my car to look like the era the car was built in. At a glance it looks stock other than sidepipes. Under the hood it looks stock other than I painted the brackets, pulleys, frame, suspension, etc like I want. A custom look. By custom I mean it is what I like. Some like it, some don't. I feel I personalized my car and I like it.  It's your car, paint it like you want and the biggest thing is enjoy your ride.

The Brake Booster was painted a semi-flat black up to 77!After that they were Cadmium plated. Getting the top two bolts is a PITA. Best way I found if to take the dash/ dash bezel out and use a long extension (or several). You can do it from below if you have small hands, patience and a good back. The dash panel on the pre 78 is not too hard to pull loose to get access and the 78 and later the dash bezel will come out and pretty easy to give access. Any way you do it it is a PITA! Good luck!
