It seems to me that cloth was not an option in the '76 Vette. My '76 has light grey cloth interior (well, the seats) that comes close to matching the carpet (is THAT original too?)
Am i right, am i crazy, or am I both?

According to the Corvette Black Book, there is no mention of anything but vinyl interiors as standard and leather as an option in '76. Starting in '77 leather was made standard and leather/cloth combination as an option.
If your car is a very late build '76, there's always the possibility that '77 options may have been installed. It looks like about the only way to know is to have documentation such as the tank sticker, window sticker, sales invoice, etc.

What does the trim tag say? It could be possible it had the 77 designed cloth, but, it would have to be a very late build.

Hmm....well, my VIN ends in 41882, so it seems to have been toward the end of the run, but by no means the absolute end. The seats are a very light gray with black leather backs....SOUNDS like a '77 seat. You can see pictures in this thread:

It looks like my trim tag is mostly missing, assuming that you mean the paper tag on the driver side door.
Interesting.

The trim tag is the metal tag riveted to the driver's door jamb, just above the hinge.
Post the information on that and someone here can decode it for you.

Your's is a July '76 car...last month of production for '76 was August...it's possible.
There is another thread on trim tags here, with pics. Lemme look for it, and I'll post a link, so you can see the trim tag location....
