Vette(s): 1976 Brown with Buckskin Interior. I bought her on 9/15/03 and just received it on OCT 1st 2003!! It needs interior work, and some things under the hood, but I am so excited! Just waiting for Summer of 2004 to totally show it off.
anyone do that?? Replace their radio in their 1976? Would you suggest getting a replacement org or go with an update new face place stuff?? |ohwell|

IF you want to keep it original then leave the radio as it is. However, if you want to get the most pleasure out of the Corvette experience then tunes you can hear and enjoy then you will definately need to upgrade. From personal experience, stay away from the Custom Auto Sound units. They are very disappointing.

Hi Suzanne...

You don't live too far from me (I'm in Frederick). I went to MyerEmco locally and bought an Alpine CD/stereo for my '78. They did a first class installation and it sounds great. The way I look at it, guage bezels aren't expensive, and if I want to ever put it back to original stock, I'd just buy the bezel and install it with an original radio.

BTW - the Alpine I bought doesn't have a remote CD player...it's built in. I'm more than happy to change CD's one at a time rather than load up a changer elsewhere in the car.

Gunslinger,

I'm in Cooksville (western Howard) - was thinking about using Myer-Emco to install an Alpine. Would like to hear from you (or see yours). Worried about a shop hacking it up. |no-no|

Suzanne -

Curious to know what you did with the radio changeout? I'm just up 97 from you in Cooksville.

bwritt -

You're welcome to ask anything about my installation or see it anytime you like. I'm usually available. I live just outside Frederick in Braddock Heights.

It's pretty easy to hack up the dash bezel if someone isn't careful. I've installed radios befre, but never modified a dash or dash bezel, and my fine skills leave something to be desired, so I had experienced people do it.

I'm glad you all started this string. I'm just about to replace my stereo, and was thinking about custom audio sound. Does anyone else feel that they are not worth it?
I'm able to buy a modern stereo because my bezel was already modified by the previous owner. I could just use this one, and hold off on replacing it.

I have no personal experience with Custom Auto Sound, but I've heard enough negative things about their products that I would be very wary of them. The way I see it, there's plenty of known quality makes out there. If I want to keep my car 100% original, then it's a factory radio...if I'm not concerned about originality and want great sound, then I've already disregarded originality and want the best I can reasonably afford. For me and my '78, that was Alpine. I installed an Alpine some years back in a car I once owned and loved it, my Lincoln LS has an Alpine Audiophile system that shakes the ground, so it was an easy decision to have an Alpine installed in my '78 Silver Anniversary.

Well as far as installation of a new stereo, it's not done yet. However I did buy that USA 5 with 10 disk cd changer from CC. My hubby thinks I should have gone with something newer, liek a sony or whatever. I wanted to keep the org look in that car. When the carpet comes out the stereo will be put in too. I will let you all know asap. As I do take lots of pics when thigs are done to my car. You can always see my webpage to check out what's been done!!!
