i have a kinda silly question.. i am trying to put a new shifter boot on my (auto) trans lever.. but i can't get that black knob of the lever.. and before screwing it up i better ask first... how to get that knob off.. i would think i  just can sscrew it off .. although it didn't move at all when trying with hand-force ??

Nope...take the "button" off first. The black knob should screw off with a little muscle.

Art,

Here's what you should do. First take some PB Blaster or similar solvent and give a squirt between the black knob and the silver button.

Then, if your button is as stubborn as the black knob, you will need to use pliers of some sort on it - I've wrapped the in cloth or a piece of rubber matting and used a vice grip with just enough pressure to crack it free. Take care to protect it....

Then, take one of those rubber mat jar openers and get a 2 handed grip and turn - it will come off. In the worst instance, you can destroy the knod with water pump pliers if you have to in order to get it to break loose - $10 to $15 to replace with a fresh one....

Good luck

Paul
