ARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGHHHHH.    Almost had it off when TING and there it went.  Anybody know where to get a date coded windshield for a 71 ASAP.  I am trying to get it together for Bloomington in 2 weeks. Not in the usual catalogues.  It is only a 3 inch crack.  Has anyone ever tried one of those crack repair kits/services?

Use wire, NOT a knife!

Some glass shops may be able to repair it.  The pro equipment does a better job than the kit sold in aftermarket.  A bit more money, but far cheaper than a new windsheild.

Not sure they can fix a 3in. crack, I know they can fix a rock ding so it doesn't become a crack, if you go with the cracked windshield and you have to wash the car make sure the WS is cold or the cold water on a warm WS will send the crack the rest of the way.

Don't know about fixing the crack and making it look good, but be sure to ask questions if you go with an aftermarket "dated" glass. The original dates were laminated inside of the windshield, between the layers, and judges (NCRS/Bloomington) will look for this. Aftermarket glass is usually etched(acid)/sandblasted/ or even just a simple decal! You might check with Paragon Vintage, as they have used glass.($$$)
Bummer about the crack, tho Best way to cut them out is to let them sit in the hot sun all day, and then use thin piano wire. Too little too late, eh?

The LOF glass was originally made by Libby Owens Ford and now market their classic glass under the name of Pilkington Classics.  Their number is 800-848-1351.  I was told costs are as follows:

Windshield $175.00.  Add LOF insignia and date code $50.00.  Shipping $90.00.  I think they are based in Ohio.  I've never called them, but I picked this info up off the NCRS site.

Hope this helps.

Mike Corvette427

There is no way I could replace what this website is worth!

I called Pilkington Classics.  Prices are up a little but I get a windshield made by the original manufacturer with the exact date code I want.  They will put the code inside the class or outside as you request.

Windshield (tinted)  $225
Date code         &n bsp;     $50
shipping        &nbs p;         $90

Thanks a ton Mike. I have been looking thru Hemmings all day and this is by far the best option.  Will you be at Blooming ton this year?

Would love to go to Bloomington, and will be close, but won't have the Vette.  I'm towing a trailer with a Triumph TR6 to my brother in Iowa and I don't have enough time to get up to Illinois.  Too bad, as I will be really close. Will be in Davenport, IA.

Hope you get the windshield in time so you can show the car.  Let us know about the quality of the windishield and date, etc.  as I need a dated windshielf for my 68.  All my other glass is dated correctly, but the windshield is not.

Mark

Will do.  They said it will ship tomorrow and I should have it by middle of next week which should give me plenty of time to install.  Will send pictures if my daughter can help me figure out how to post them.

Thanks again
Neil
