Now that I have a radio, I found that I can't turn my key to the accessory position. The lock cyl is already against the column in the off to start position, so I can't push it in any further to go past off. What would cause that? And besides taking off the steering wheel, what is needed to fix? It is a '73 tilt/tele column. Joe

I believe that there is a timing sequence involved when your tumblers are changed. Sounds like they should be removed and set back in correctly

Vette(s): 1979 Black coupe. 11256 original, documented, miles on it when I bought it in April of 2000. It now has 13100 on it. Oyster interior, like new. Everything original, everything works, except the clock. Paint has a couple of minor flaws.

There is also an adjustment on top of the steering column for the ignition switch. It is down low on the column. A rod from the key lock moves the switch to the right locations. Really hard to get to, but it can be done. You might have to loosen and drop the steering column a little bit to get to the switch. Kind of a pita to work on..

Good luck!

hmmm.... that doesn't seem to be the problem. The other positions work fine, just can't push the tumbler in to go to "accessory". (Unless I am totally messed up, and "acc" isn't past the lock position?) Joe

Joe,

Acc. is past the off position. If you can't move the key in that direction, I'm almost sure it is out of adjustment. I don't have my manuals in the house, but I will look at them tomorrow, and send more info then. |ohwell|

I got this info from corvettefaq. It tells how to adjust the key switch. http://www.corvettefaq.com/c3/Ignition&DimmerAdj01JN01.doc

Have you or any previous owners changed the ignition switch? I changed mine, and it is out of adjustment. I never use the acc position at any time, so I didn't readjust it. My key switch will go in, but won't turn far enough to get into the acc position. I know that mine is out of adjustment, that is why I think yours is. I could be wrong though....

Have you tried the Park/Reverse trick? I guess it's not much of a trick if you have an auto, but when I put in my new lock cylinder, the key wouldn't come out. Turned out to be the lever on the firewall under the brakebooster which is supposed to connect the transmission to the steering, so that you cannot start the car or something while it is not in park or reverse.

The lever should be all the way up.
