I am about to install new carpeting in my 79. I have replaced the carpeting on the back of the seats and the panels on the sides of the ctr console to get a feel for what I am getting into. the 3M adhesive I am using is basically a contact cement. I am concerned about positioning the larger pcs, especially the driver side because of the pedals. any helpful hints on how to position the carpet correctly since you only have one chance to get it right?

Hank, try putting the carpet in place where you want it without any glue. Then use a soapstone marker to make alignment marks on the carpet and related edge areas.

Once marked, remove the carpet, apply the adhesive, and reinstall by lining up the marks.

Soap stone is used in construction and can be found at hardware stores, etc. It cleans off with out leaving any marks.

definitely place the carpet in before gluing to check for fit. I replaced mine with wilcox I believe and everyone says factory cut to fit....well that is definitely not true. Take your time and it will look good.

Ditto on the carpet, go slow with the glue part, what is that saying measure twice cut once . . . anyway, very kwel color it does not appear standard? Blues and browns, earth tones.

Or use masking tape to make aligning marks.

You could also put the carpet in place and the glue it in sections... i.e., put the carpet down, then lift the front half and glue it keeping the back half in place, when the front dries then lift the back half and glue it (or vise-versa).

I have not done mine yet,but talked to Mikes78 and he said not to do mine without buying the interior screw sets they sell.He said it saved him several times when he stripped and ruined some of the screws.

This is probably a moot point at this time, but mine went in and molded nicely around all the corners by laying it out in the sun for about an hour. You're welcome to come on down, it'll be be 83 deg. tomorrow...Sorry, couldn't resist |biggrin| . A heat lamp or space heater, maybe....don't know.
