Aside from all the Custom Autosound, Ecklers, Mid-America and other catalogs and without sticking a big box in the back that will consume all my "Trunk space" what is the cleanest, coolest stereo installaton I can do in my 76. I know I can replace the speakers in the dash. Can I put additional speakers in the kickpanel location? Any problems doing this? So, I can possiby get 4 - 4x6" speakers in the front. What about out back? How about a sub and a couple of 6x9's? there are some sizable pockets on each of the sides in the rear. How about an Amp? Has anyone put it behind the right side dash? Any suggestions for alternative locations(out of sight). As for the Tuner I can use one of the Auto sound units and a CD Changer. Possibly one of the Secret Audio units? Does anyone have any alternatives without destroying a pristine dash?

Don't know what to tell you Dave. I have the original speakers and radio in my 76. They don't work well at all but I'm real hesitant to replace them.
That's a big job to get into the dash and console. It took me 3 weeks just to install carpet, door panels and weather strips. The down time just about killed me...
I'd like to hear what the other guys/gals did to solve the stereo issue...

My advice is not to cut the center cluster for any reason. Keep shopping until you find a system you can live with which will fit the Corvette dash without cutting. Several of these are available from the aftermarket providers. There is a limited amount of speaker space available behind the kick panels. This was the stock speaker location for the 68-69 models and will mount up to 4x10 speakers. Be advised it can sometimes get wet in this area so you want to shield your speakers from the weather. There is a small amount of space in front of the jack compartment and the battery box in the rear. Pull the battery and the storage box, then use a flashlight to see the area in front of the kick up panel. On the 81-82 models, the computer is located in this area in front of the battery. Either place may give you the space you need to mount an amplifier. The location is also convenient for running wiring up the console to the dash. Good luck.

Having tried to replace the radio in my '74 ( 35 years ago when I wias still
young and flexible, I opted to roll over and pay someone else to replace the radio
in my '69. I now have an am/fm cassette in the dash and a 5 disk changer in the
rear compartment and a power antenna. I also have no skinned knuckles, broken
wires, destroyed consoles and don't have to start taking valium. It cost $400.00
but it was finished in 3 hours. And I love it
So, I guess my advice, if you have a couples of bucks, go to a reputable sterio
shop and let them do it. I ordered the components from Mid-America.

Well I did cut my center console for my cd head unit install and I made my own boxes for the back and mounted an amp on the back wall. Also have a removable bazooka tube for my serious bass tunes and it has it's own on/off switch and volume knob.

I also cut my console to fit in a newer head unit. I thought about getting one of the units that would fit in the stock location, but I like what I did because I like the newer head units much more.

You should check out Vettespecialties.com for their DIN radio conversion bezel. The modification to your guage bezel is simple, and the bracket makes a clean install.

how about making custom doors for the rear storage compartments and mounting speakers in them. they would be out of the way , not taking any "trunk room. and be right behind both seats.

I know you posted this awhile ago, but wondering if you ever came up with the answers to your questions? I'm new to the forum though I've had my '76 since the early 80's.

Anyway, I have a 6 speaker system working with subwoofers in a rear-hanging enclosure. Used the kickpanels for the front and it all works great (oh, amp in one of the rear glove compartments).

Well, if you want to know more let me know. Always good to "meet" another fellow '76er.
