The clocks are different...not to say they may or may not fit in the other bezel, but the applications are different.

The tachs are different as well...in '76 an electric tach was used since GM was using HEI beginning in '75. The '73 tach would still have been cable driven.

Thanks Bruce,
I took a look in the mid american catalog and they list electric clocks to enterchange from 68-82, quartz from 68-81. It appears the have a different face design. If I remember right this is a pretty simple change. If not the face will just look different. (At least it will be working.
I thought the 73 tach was a gear drive but wan't sure. I think I will let that one slid and wait for a deal to show up on an electric.

There's a guy in florida that converts your tach (mechanical to electronic). I did it to mine & it worked fine until I took it out & installed digital gauges. I'll havfe to dig if you want his address.

Alan,

That would be great... I could buy Mid america's replacement but I have been puttin it off. I hate to pull that center cluster out.
So in the meantime I have been checkin out every swap meet and EBAY regularly for a couple of years. Since I only put about 800 mi. on it a year it isn't that big a deal. It's one of the last little things I want to fix.

I found it  http://www.corvetteinstruments.com/catalog/68_upintservice.h tm

His web page has changed, but this is the guy. I called him..very nice..and I've used him 2-3 times ..no problems. The tach was accurate & looked like an 68 tach , but has the electronics of a later C3

One hint when taking your center cluster and bezel out...replace all the gauge lights. Most, if not all the light bulbs there are likely the originals so it would be good preventative medicine to replace them while the bezel is out and that printed circuit is somewhat fragile, especially when you factor in its age. No reason to take the thing apart any more than necessary and light bulbs are inexpensive addition to the work you're doing.

I did a quartz conversion on mine, worked great. The same face and needles are used with the conversion kit.

Alan,

Thanks for the info. I will give the guy a call.

Bruce,
Thanks for mentioning the bulbs, I hadn't thought that far ahead yet. I will definately change them out while I have it apart. I did manage to dig out the book today to see what fun I was gonna be in for.
