I have a purely aesthetic question.  I have my console cover taken off as I am replacing my ash tray door slides and while I have it apart, I would like to re-finish the ash tray door and the areas around the automatic shifter and the area where the P,R 1,2,3 is located.  My cover has the wood grain look to it, but the areas that I want to re-finish are black and faded.  Has anyone tackled trying to paint these areas?  If so, is there a special kind of paint that I need to use?  Also, what did you use to take off the original paint?  Thanks!

I painted some of my plastic interior parts last year, using the spray paint from Corvette America. I just cleaned the parts and painted them. Looked good.

I just used some black Rustoleum paint I had. I put a thin coat of vasaline on the chrome areas and painted the whole thing. after the paint had dried all I had to do was wipe off the chrome areas and I was done.

Semi-flat black; off the shelf at Wal-Mart.  It's a near perfect match for the factory black.

So...I used the Krylon paint.  Do I need to put some kind of a sealer on it?  It seems to be pretty scratch prone...

No sealer on mine and I've done three of them.

It does look good.   I think the problem might be that I took the ash tray door down to the metal.  It had some minor scratches on it and I used a fine steel wool to polish it out and I decided to just go down to the metal.  Should I have primed it before I painted it?

ok...so whats the best way to prime it now?  Can I prime over paint?  Or do I have to strip it back down to the metal?
