I was wondering what you guy's do about the chrome flaking off the console (heater control, etc.). Has anyone painted over it? If so what kind of paint will stick to chrome plating? Thanks, TerryM

For an OK look, you can sand the edges smooth, and Eastwood sells chrome paint. It is pretty good. Otherwise, everything is available in reproduction. Console tops and gauge bezels are $220, and $140, and the heater control face is about $80. So it is probably worth investing a few dollars and hours in trying to paint yours.
If you want to paint a color, just break the glaze of the chrome, and you can paint.

I have painted the chrome strip on both my shifter console and gauge cluster using "bumper chrome" paint from the auto supply. NO, it isnt quite as bright as real chrome but it looks very good. I have replaced the center air vents in the gauge cluster and even with new chrome on the vents, in close proximity to the chrome paint, it looks good. I sprayed a little of the chorme paint into a small plastic cup and dipped a tightly wrapped "Q-tip" into the paint, rolling off the excess back into the cup. I used the SIDE of THE "Q-tip" to paint the top of the raised edges around the console. Yep, a steady hand helps but it really wasnt difficult to get what I consdider to be a good job. Most of the chrome was off of my console but if there is still chrome on yours, a scotbright pad applied gently and some degreaser would probably be a good prep.

Thanks for the tips guy's. I've never tried chrome paint before, but its worth a shot. Your right Larry, pretty pricy for replacements.
Your original console trim plate is plated underneath the semi-flat black paint. You probably do not need any tppe of chrome paint. Clean it good; mask off the larger areas of chrome, then shoot it with Krylon semi-flat black.

You can order semi-flat from the specialty houses, but it isn't necessary. The Krylon is available off the shelf just about everywhere and it's cheap. It's a near perfect match for the factory semi-flat black. Lacquer thinner on a rag or a q-tip will remove the Krylon from areas where you want chrome.

Your right Mike. I hadn't looked at it since last fall. The black over the plating is the problem. The chrome line around it really isn't that bad. The plating is chipped off pretty good. Mabe a good idea to scrape off the rest before painting? Stick better? Thanks for your help. TerryM
