Not sure this is the right forum... has anyone added an aftermarket cruise control on a '73 with manual shift... if so Does anyone make a good looking set-up
I have put them on other cars and it looks so-so... sure would like it on those long trips....

I don't know of anyone who has tried, but maybe the cruise controls from a 77 or later (the first year it was offered) could be retrofitted. You may have to swap steering columns to get it to fit maybe? You would have to be careful with the manual transmission, pressing in the clutch and allowing the car to slow down could redline the engine in a big hurry. Probably would be safest if there were a cancel switch on both the clutch and brake pedals. Mine had the remnants of aftermarket cruise when I bought it. I really didn't care for the exposed wire running to the switch that was attached to the turn signal lever with a clamp.

Many, MANY years ago I bought a cruise unit from Sears. The control module mounted on the turn signal lever and looked like many of the factory units at the time. It had a chain that connected the brake and clutch pedals to a cutout switch so depressing either would disengage. I moved the unit to several cars that I owned over the years until I bought one with factory cruise on it. Sorry I don't remember the brand name.

Had a JC Whitney catalog pop up in my mailbox not too long ago. Shows Cruise control setups, about $150 to $250. Looks like they come with a control that replaces just the end of the signal stalk.
"Google" jc whitney and check em out.
I wouldn't enjoy driving my Vette with cruise, especially with the 4 speed, but that's just me. |toungecool|

You would hard pressed to retrofit a later factory cruise control to your car...far too many different parts to obtain and work into your car and its wiring harness. Even if you found every part you would need, they would likely be used and of indifferent working quality.

I think you'd be miles ahead to buy an aftermarket model like sold through Whitney's. They have several to pick from and at least would be complete and with a warranty.

Yes, I put Cruise Control in my 73. I too didn't want just another after market unit.

I got one from Rostra. http://www.rostra.com/cruise-control.htm You can see what they have on their website, you'll need to call them to get setup with what you will need.

They had a turn signal control that replaces the stock turn signal arm. Looks very professional and not like a generic add-on.

I also got a speed sensor unit that fits in the speedometer cable. The speedometer cable in the 73 is actually 2 smaller cables joined together (or so it was in my 73). They come together just as it turns up by the firewall (2 feet from where it goes thru the firewall). The perfect place for their sensor.

As for the cost I found them reasonable for what you are getting. If cost is an issue, a generic aftermarket unit might be a more cost effective way to go.
