As some of you will be aware, I have recently been installing a thermal lining on my 78 and therefore had the interior ripped out, including the dash board.

The dash board has seen heaps of sun so it was quiet fragile (the top of it anyway). I managed to damage the front left and right hand corners (windshield side) of my dash board. The top of the dash also has other small cracks in it as well.

I glued the broken bits back on and when putting the dash back in broke a few samll bits back off again. oh well.

I have seen US$500 new dash board form the likes of Corvett America but by the time I import one of those it'll cost me NZ$1200 so I'm reluctant to spend that much when the rest of the dash is quite good.

I have also seen US$170 dash board covers which look to be a thin dashboard skin that you glue over top of your whole dashboard. Are they any good, do they look the part of are they rubbish?? anyone used one?

Any other suggestion on how to fix up a dash board without replacing it all? I have seen a carpet type dash cover for teh top of the dash, but have been reluctant to go in that direct so far.

Cheers

P.S. Thanks to all you guys for your help since I joined up, I have tried to do most things on my own, but it's sure great to have somewhere to turn for these kinds of problems. You just dont get the same depth and immediate level of help locally here in NZ.

Try recovering it yourself using a heat gun & contact cement or take it to someone who can...shouldn't cost that much & it'll look like new. I purchased a used one on ebay a few months ago & will do the above soon. Mine had one of those dash covers when I purchased the car and I didn't care for it (looked cheap).

Hey, if this was still the 70's, you could glue a nice SHAG rug onto the dash and be right in style.

It's a matter of what you are willing to accept. There are vinyl repair materials, but they look like a patch. The skin replacements are difficult to get to lay down wrinkle free. Both are better than nothing, but neither will look as good as a total replacement.
