My drivers side door mirror has gotten "wobbly". Not where the pedestal attaches to the door, but where the mirror body attaches to the pedestal. Is there a nut or something inside the mirror that can be tightened? How do I get to it? How tough is it to R & R the door panel? Not power mirrors.

i dont really know how they are constructed on your 81
on a 69 there is no real adjustment.. once the ball and socket are worn your stuck buying a new one..
unless its a one driver car... then you can superglue.

If it is the sport mirrors, you have to take it off the door. Take door panel off inside. Lower window, and you may have to loosen the anti-rattle pieces to make clearance for a 7/16" wrench or socket getting to the mounting bolts for the mirror. Loosening these pieces will allow you to pull the door glass toward you to make room for the wrench. Have a magnet wand ready in case you drop the nuts down into the door shell. It is a tight squeeze, but it can be done. You will have to snake the remote cable around the inspection panels of the door at the front. There is one inspection plate to take off on the door. After removal, there are two star head bolts looking up from the mounting flange of the mirror. Tighten with star driver and re-mount doing the reverse. You may want to put a little loc-tite on the bolts. Watch you do not over tighten, the mirror shell looks to be made from cast aluminum or pot metal. While the mirror assembly is off the car, put a little silicone grease on the cables. This is about a 45 minute job.

Sounds like fun... is there any trick to removing/replacing the door panel without disaster?
Thanks...
Thanks...

Unscrew arm rest screws, panel phillips decorative screws, remote mirror bezel screws, inside door handle bezel screws, take out door lock pull. There are two screws in front and back. When removing panel, there will be body panel adhesive around the permiter. Pull panel off slowly, and look down to see the door lock plug. Just separate. There will be a vapor barrier in place of plastic or paper. This has taken 10 minutes. Putting it back on will be 10 minutes. Getting the mirror unit off and on will be 25 minutes of "this ain't no piece of cake". May take longer. Go for it.............
