Ah, the joys of a new (to me) car. Latest issue is with the driver door window. It rolls up, but not all the way - maybe 4/5ths of the way, then acts like it's stripped and won't go any further. I haven't taken the door panel off yet, just looking for some comments before I do it. Other issues are the door glass rattles freely. Looking at parts available, it looks like I need a set of bumpers and the top trim pieces to keep the water out (hopefully won't need those ). I'll know more when I dig into it. Oh, and I went to test the door locks, and they work fine from the inside, but not on the outside. It took me a few minutes (ok, days) to remember that GM cars used a different key for the doors and ignition . Of course, the previous owner doesn't have the door keys. No problem though, my new best friend Eckler's is sending me a couple of new cores as we speak.

I forgot to ask, all the catalogs list parts as left and right side. Is the driver side the left side?

Not a lot of advice I can offer with the window, other than the obvious, which you are already doing: take the door panel off and see what's blocking it from going up further.

The "left side" is the driver's side.  Just remember that it is oriented as if you were sitting in the car facing forward.

Anytime you need to order parts, always state "Driver side", or "Pass. side". That way there is never any confusion.(well, ALMOST never!)

Gm hasn't always used different keys for the doors and ign. If I remember correctly, the square key fit the door and the ign. up to '73, and then after that, the square key fit only the ign. The oval key on the earlier cars(up to '73) fit the storage compartment lock, and the spare tire lock, as well as the alarm system on the '73. From '74 up, the oval key fits the doors, the storage compartment lock, the spare tire lock, and the alarm.

I can't help much on your winder problem. It sounds like you may have a stripped regulator gear. I hate tring to get winders to fit right!!(cause I cain't never do it!)

On my '69 the square key fits the door and ignition, so Adam's right.

Hmmm - so I'm going to guess that either both doors have been re-cored or, more likely, the ignition has. jgoglick38846.4580324074

Most likely the ignition switch has been changed, John. If you take one of the door locks out, you can have a key made. It would be much easier than changing both door locks.

I had the same issue with my 79. The regulator gear teeth were stripped. The power window motor is usually fine.

You first need to remove the door panel and see if this is what it is. You'll see a semi circular set of teeth that the little window motor gear winds on to run the window up and down. Toward one end, you should see some teeth ground away.

If this is the case, you have two options. You can replace the whole regulator geat plate or use a repair piece, sold through the catalogs - the gear repair part screews right against the old teeth and match up perfectly - that's what I used.

This is the whole replacement plate

This is the repair piece.

Mid America sells these as well as most other dealers...

I hope this helps!

Good luck!

Luke

Adam - thanks for the tip on the locks!

Luke - I think you just saved me a bunch of time!

Replace any worn window rollers while you're in there!!
