I'm a newbie. I just bought a 1982 Silvergreen with matching interior. It needs some interior cosmetics and I've got a couple of questions. Can anyone tell me how to prepare the leather seats for dyeing? I have no way of knowing what was used on the seats for the last 25 years and don't want fisheyes or mottled areas. 2nd, I'd like to paint the console & gauge bezels and jazz em up with wood inserts. The plastic is in pretty dull condition and the silver edges are just about worn off. Has anyone painted the plastic black? What do I need to use to prep the surface to give it some bite and what kind of paint to use? Any suggestions on where to buy nice quality wood inserts?
I've spent the last couple days reading posts and have gotten some good tips. Great forums, I'll be signing up for sure. JanSPONSOR AD:: (Our Sponsors help support C3VR)
Welcome to C3VR and congratulations on your new hobby.
Before you dye the leather, try a good cleaner and conditioner. You might be surprised how they look.
If the leather is worn, the dye may be a temporary fix until you can replace the leather and cushions.
You will need to remove all the dirt and oils on the leather before dyeing. Not sure if a good cleaner like 409 or soap and water will do the trick or if you need a commercial cleaner.
Look in the Yellow Pages for a leather or dry cleaning store or leather repair store and see what they recommend.
As for paint, most of the Corvette parts suppliers sell paint for the plastic interior parts. Like anything else you paint, the prep is the most important part. I got a can of spray paint from Corvette Central and it matched my gray parts perfectly. I would think they (and others) have a black that would match.
I got my wood trim parts at Carlisle, PA. At the show they were 10% off, no shipping and I could make sure they fit before I took them home. Easy to install and they clean up nice. I don't remember the name of the company, but they attend all the big auto shows.

Thanks Dave. You're exactly right, I want to squeak a couple years outta the seatcovers before replacing. They're in good shape with just the usual abrasions from wear.
I'll look for the paint and prep on the Corvette supply sites. Thanks!
This is our first Corvette but we're not newbies on the old car scene. I've owned my 62 Impala convertible for 10 years and husband Dave drives a 61 Belair 409 that we bought on Ebay in 2000.
I sure am loving the forums and I'm soaking it all in. Thanks for your reply.
Although I replaced most of my interior I had some parts that needed painting. I used the stuff from Corvette America. The color match was perfect however its very Thin. I highly recommend a primer if they have one for your color.

Hi Karen. Thanks for your reply. I'm in the process of gathering all the supplies and asking all the questions now for our interior resto this winter. It's cruising season in CT and we just bought the car so we're on the go. It will be a wait but I will let you know how it all goes.
This is such a helpful site and the people here are so nice. I'm really enjoying it.
Not trying to dodge the question but I would give the folks up at Corvette America a call. All I have to say is if the leather has worn through the dye and its a light color you will use a heap of that dye to cover.
