Howdy Rob,
I did the interior of my '76. I removed everything that was going to be re-dyed, cleaned them with simple green and made what ever repairs were needed. I found that a couple light coats worked best. After they were dry, I then gave them a coat of semi-gloss clear. They turned out very nice. New fasteners and clips finished off the job. Be sure to have plenty of dye. There can be shade differances between lot numbers. I can send you a couple before and afters if you wish.

Owen,

What is 'simple green', and where can I get it?

Also, what did you use for the dye, and where would you recommend buying it? I am changing my red interior to black in my 78, and just want to know what all I will be needing.

Thanks!
Bill

Simple Green is the name of a general purpose cleaner. It is a good degreaser and did not harm the interior parts. It can be found at most auto parts stores. I deluted it about 50/50 with water. I used a soft bristle brush. You can get the dye from most of the parts vendors. I would recommend one of our sponsors here such as Corvette America or Bairs. Get enough the first time! I used about 8-10 cans. Get all of it from the same vendor and from the same lot number. You shouldn't have any trouble with black but my light grey was a problem and I had to return 3 cans that were from a different lot number. While you have the driver's side dash out, paint the steering column! Good luck!

I also use green to remove any oil from the paint, as well as the mags. GREAT STUFF! I take it with on every event.

I had the interior of my 74 coupe also redone, although I took the easy way out. It had some guy taking the interiour out - seats/ pannels/ everything I wanted re-coloured - and then ... I took it to a specialist to colour and the guy who took it out reassemble it again. (It is so much easier when you are a girl |biggrin|)

The complete interiour was saddle before. I changed the carpets and the top parts to black. The rest (seats, door and console pannels) I recoloured saddle. It looks stunning.

Enjoy your Vette's!!! |thumb|
