Pulled from the swamps of Miami!
Its a driver and back on the road!
I have a 1978 where the previous onwer put on a cover to redue the front dash panel. A full cover for the whole dash. Ok so where the speakers are on the top of the dash there are holes for sound but I believe on the original das there was a grille covering the speakers and I thougth 4 screws where yo could remove the cover and then the speakers. Could someone verify this for me. My though is ...the speakers are inop and someone has adhereded this cover all over the original dash, I need to get a new windshield so I am thinking when they remove the old windshield they can peel back this vinyl cover and expose the original dash with panel access to the speakers I unscrew 4 screws and take out the old speakers and replace with new spec speakers and reapply sealant to the front of the vinyl and thenput on the new windshield and I have sound.
just don't iknow if the 1978 for sure have the speaker grill that removes and if how? al;so once removed will the speakers be able to be removed and new ones inserted. cannot not find pictures to confirm this.. Any help would be appreciated as doing the windshield soon and no access to inspect a 1978 car to verify this. new to this Corvette addiction....1st one and running out of money??? Thanks Mark

You might consider leaving as is. In my 74, there is room behind the kick panels for 6" speakers with no modification to the panel it self.
Not sure about 78"s

I know the 78 is a different animal than my 76. I had to go from underneath to install my dash speakers. Then like steve I put in a couple of 6x9's in the kickpanels. They fit right in and the kickpanel appear to have been made for them. Quad sound with no real extra modifications to do.
Now I can turn the radio on with the top out going down the road and actuallly hear it..... Now Ain't That Somethin.....Tuxblacray 2008-02-02 12:20:45

Thanks for the info not sure on the skin but worth a try if the window is out. Thanks BB78
Hay, Tux my 76 has funky little speakers in the back up on each side hump hanging there, I wanted to put speakers in the dash and it look pretty hard to do without going underneath or taking apart the dash. I thought about the kick panels. So 6X9's will fit in the kick panels?

Babyblue 78, it sounds like if you didn't have that cover it wouldn't be to bad. You might want to replace the top pad at the same time and it will look better when you are all done.

Yep without much to do.... The dash speakers aren't that big of a deal either. you just have to be carefull on the drivers side when you pull the cluster panel out some. Passenger side glove box panel wasn'nt a problem though.

They are made for them. The 68s and 69s had factory 4x10 speakers behind each kick panel. Plenty of room there in the later models.
