On my first real outing with my car yesterday  The gas gauge was bouncing around like a ping pong ball.Is this a sign of a bad gauge ,or is it the sending unit? The oil pressure gauge may do this once in a great moon.but the other gauges don't move.

My Gas Gauge moves around a lot when I take off and when I stop. It settles down when I'm cruising down the road. It kinda bugs me. My gauge and sending unit were new about a year ago when I was redoing interior. I wonder if they are all like this? Mine is a  72 so probably same as yours.

That's not really a big deal but can be annoying..I would bet the float on the sending unit is loose and not staying on the end of its bar..making any fuel movement extreme..I don't think these cars have a resister that makes the gauge move slower so when the float moves it is instant..I know my car has the sending unit on the bottom of the tank so I would have to drain the tank to even check it..so it may be a good time to replace the unit anyhow..it should come with a new float also..I would put this issue on the bottom of the list though..my gauge is not accurate..it shows more gas than what's in the tank..the only way I can adjust it is find someone with a really small arm to reach in there and bend it down or remove it..so that's probably not going to happen..not bad of a problem since it was your first trip this year..maybe make another up to Chips show in November!

The older cars do have a resistor mounted between the two studs on the backs of the gauges, to try to keep the gauge needle from bouncing like that. They can sometimes loose connection for a while, the all of a sudden, they will work fine again.
With the advent of the electronic gauges in '75, I'm not sure how they did it, but there will still be some sort of resistor/buffer in the circuit somewhere, possibly still mounted to the back of the gauge....

Thanks for the insight guys.I'm not going to worry about this for now, like Rich said it dose get annoying.I know when I stopped on the way home to get gas the gauge was bouncing between E and 1/2 a tank.I am just going to have to make sure I have plenty of gasLOL not the bean kind eihter.Rich I will let you guys know if I can make Corvettes for Chip, have to see how things gose. This job is going to the bottom of the list.

I had an Austin Healey 3000 Mark III that when the gas gauge broke we used a yardstick until the gauge was fixed!
