Are you talking about the screws visible around the gauge faces? Allen I think? Those are cosmetic only. You need to remove the whole gauge cluster and remove the individual gauges from the back side.  Mike

Small warning - When the bezel is removed, do it gingerly..  The guages will go flying out of the bezel other wise..  I learned the hear way..  BTW, your attachment screws should only be up toward the top, I believe on the side and down below....

Yep the "screws" around the actual guages are cosmetic only. If I remember rightly from when I had mine out there are 2 real screws at the top of the whole vertical console panel, 1 on each side halfway-ish down, AND also 2 hidden screws at the bottom of the vertical console (ie the bit that contains the guages) which secure it to the horizontal console (containing the ashtray etc.) These 2 screws can only be seen and got to by removing the carpet sides from either side of the horizontal console. They can be a bit tricky to see, but with a torch you should find them ok either side of the bottom of the vertical console where it meets the horizontal console. You have to get at them from behind ie handle of the screwdriver will be pointing towards the firewall, tip towards the rear wheels. If you don't undo these two screws you will break off the plastic tabs on the bottom of the vertical console which they pass through which is what I discovered the previous owner of mine had done.

Another trap once you have the vertical console all loose and ready to come out is that it will probably catch on the less than tidy (out of view) sides of the hole in the dash in which it lives. Just gently slide something thin and flat down between each side of the console and the dash (like a credit card) to deal to this.

I'm sure I have some pix of mine while it was out if you need them...

Cheers !   ... and have fun

Kiwi Chris

Frank,  If your car has rear defrost, you may also need to remove the defroster switch to allow the gauge cluster to move forward enough to come out of the dash.  It is a real PITA to take out due to the cramped spaces for the two screws that hold it in.  It can be done but you have to work blind on the inside screw.  Be aware that the cluster light assembly is located at the top of the gauge bezel, you wont see it until the entire thing is out but it will hang at the top as you try to pull the cluster out of the dash.  While you have the bezel out, I'd recommend replacing the cluster bulb, even if yours is working OK now, it may save you a lot of trouble later taking it out again just to change a bulb.  The bulb is a special type with a magnifyer lens on the end, readily available from any vette supplier but probably not at your corner automotive store.

Believe it or not NAPA carries that bulb. LMP558.
A previous owner of my vette had put a 194 bulb in its place and it melted the housing over time.
I agree with Chip. Replace 'em while you have it apart.

You may want to disconnect the battery while you are rummaging around in the shifter console and gauge cluster too, fireworks are nice but it aint the 4th of July yet...

I suppose this is all true for the clock in the cluster which I am about to rebuild.  This answers a lot of my questions. I was hoping the screws around the clock were real and not fake and I would not have to get that far into the project.  Nothing is as easy as you would hope.  Oh well looks like I will be buying a bulb while I am at it.
Thanks for the info
