The plastic knob that allows you to pull open the lights broke off.  (imagine that! the thing has only been on there for like 30yrs)   Anyway  I found the replacement part (mid-america) but it comes with the metal stem as well.  Do I remove my stem?  and if so how does that go?

the knob and stem are one unit, pull all the screws that hold the left instr. panel in place, pull back the panel at the top so that you can see the headlight switch,a couple of inch's, there is a button on the switch, push in on the button and pull the stem out, release the button, push in the new unit, done, screw the panel back in place

You must pull the knob out first (just like the lights are on).  Then push the button and it pops right out.  If you push the button when the knob is pushed in, it won't release.  The button is on the side of the switch where there are two vacuum hose connections (at least on a 68). The button has a little spring.  I have mine out right now so if you can't see it, I can always email you a photo.  After you get the knob off, there is a threaded retainer (on the knob side of the dash panel).  Just unscrew it and the light switch will separate and its out.
